Arrowhead Family I will not be able to make to Memorial this weekend. My thoughts and prayers to all the crew and family. I did not know Dan but share a deep kinship within the firefighter family. I continue to work in the fire service and still use the "Hotshot" work ethic in my everyday chores. Those years on the crew will always be with me. I am proud to have been an "Arrowhead Hotshot. Arrowhead, I was very sorry to hear of the loss of one of our own. While I didn't know Dan, the write-up in the Flagstaff paper and everything I've read on this site made it obvious that here was a man who really LIVED the years that he had among us. My deepest and most heartfelt condolences to his family and to the crew. "the Beef" '98

Brit, the crew and Dan's Family, Myself and the Breckenridge crew offers our condolences, although we did not know Dan, he was a fellow firefighter, and my connection of having the honor of having been an Arrowhead Hotshot in the early 90's hit me hard as if a family member, has fallen. Dan will be remembered in all sorts of ways, because now every wildland fire firefighter will have a connection with him. You guys are in our thoughts and prayers.

I was an Arrowhead Hotshot back in 1981, so I never had the honor to know Dan Holmes. Somehow, however, I feel like I did know him and my heart is truly sad about this horrible loss. I suspect that he would want the crew to continue its tradition of professionalism, guts, and hard work. I will be thinking of Dan, his family, his friends, and the crew. I appreciate very much being contacted by Jake about this tragedy, and am again reminded of the fragility of life.

Dear Hotshots, I want you to know that I consider the Arrowhead Hotshots and Dan Holmes to be a part of my family. Many of you know that my son Craig, was an Arrowhead Hotshot for several seasons. So we have a close family connection. In addition, the Hotshots are a part of our SEKI family. I am immensely proud of your professionalism and dedication. You always reflect superbly on SEKI, on NPS and on the firefighting profession. Also, as a young man I was a red-card carrying firefighter for over 20 years. So it is with pride that I call you all part of my extended family. I know that Dan Holmes passing has hit you all terribly hard. I am having significant difficulty dealing with it myself. In fact, I've only just now, today felt that I could express some thoughts on this tragedy. Let me make some comments for whatever comfort they can bring. Dan Holmes is a hero. He was a hero for his desire to pursue his chosen profession. He was a hero for his adventurous spirit. He was a hero for his dedication to national parks and the environment. He was a hero for his courage as a firefighter. He was a hero for the example of service to a cause greater than one's self that he set for us all. Bottom line: Dan Holmes is a hero. He will live on as such in my mind, and I'm sure yours as well, forever. When the Park Dispatcher called me on Saturday, October 2, 2004 and advised me that that one of our finest had fallen, I vowed to myself that Dan Holmes legacy to these parks and to firefighting would be one that he would be proud of. I want us all to remember Dan for the great person that he was, as a person who made a positive difference in wildland firefighting. When firefighters anywhere remember Dan Holmes, as they will often, I want to assure that they remember him for the hero that he is. The several activities in honor of Dan Holmes that occurred last week I know helped all of us to deal with his death to some degree. We are looking forward to having a local memorial that will be soon scheduled. As we look farther forward, we will be considering the most respectful and appropriate way to assure Dan's memory and legacy live on as a permanent part of SEKI history. All ideas and suggestions will be welcome in this process. As we move ahead it is my full expectation and direction that you each will take care of yourselves and each other. I expect this from the entire park staff and NPS. As I started these comments I mentioned family. I believe Dan Holmes would want us, as family, to come through this terrible tragedy even stronger than before. We will be a stronger family by supporting and caring for each other. I know you all will do that. My thoughts and heart are with each of you. Dick Martin Superintendent Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks National Park Service

Brit and all Please know that you are in my thoughts at this difficult time. As an arrowhead alumni who has been through a very difficult time professionally.  I can empathize a bit with what you are going through. One of the places that I found solace during 2000 was finding a home and a very supportive environment to heal, and that place was where you all are now. It is my sincere hope that you all will take care of each other as well as yourselves. Know that you are in the thoughts of a former Arrowhead hotshot who looks back at his time at Swale with the utmost pride. Stay strong, stay proud - Matt

As Danny's mom, i can't tell you all, each and everyone who has written on this site, how grateful i am for your love and concern! I know it is your love and prayers that have given me (and my incredible family) the strength to do the things we've had to do in these days since 10/2. I always knew what a bright and shining star my Danny was, but to hear from all over the world...its awe inspiring! The brotherhood of Firefighters and Park Service folks is indescribable (sp) i could not have gotten thru these dark days without you. There are always a million "Danny stories" in our family, i have loved hearing more from friends across the country. To "my" Arrowhead family: you are incredible I love you all and thank you for being who you are See you soon Love and hugs to all Dee

Brit and crew: I recently defended my master's thesis from UMass-Amherst in crown fuel modeling in pitch pine. The dedication know reads: To the memory of Daniel Holmes - Arrowhead Hotshots 2004. Although I did not know Dan personally, his story reminds me of the fire fighters I have worked with that demonstrate pride, safety, and teamwork. These Arrowhead principles were the foundation for my study of wildland fuels and fire. Thank you Arrowhead and may Dan’s life be remembered.

I first met Dan at Johnson State College. We lived in the same dorm building. I knew right away we would be good friends. We both loved to hike, backpack, and enjoy the outdoors. I will always remember making it to the top of many mountains in Vermont and seeing your smile. I can't think of a time when Dan wasn't smiling. He even would fall asleep with a smile. He was a kind and caring person who would do anything to help others. I looked up to my friend! He was also a great caretaker of the earth. When we would go out on hikes he was always stopping to pick up trash to keep our trails clean. Dan had Life "Dialed In!" I had the honor of spending our last time together at my wedding and what a great time we had!!! On Thursday Dan's family, friends, hotshot crew, National Park Service, and local and regional firefighters celebrated the life of Daniel Holmes. I would like to thank all who helped in honoring such a special person. May we all continue to celebrate Dan's life everyday in remembering the good times and great smiles he shared with us all. I'll miss you my good friend. Peace-Dan Dziedzic

I met Dan Holmes in January of 2002. He came to visit my son Andy at Flagstaff Medical Center. Andy was seriously injured in a climbing accident, and Dan came to offer his love and support. My heart goes out to Dan's Mom, family, Jules, friends around the country--and mostly to his brothers in the Hotshots. You are all heroes. Dan was a hero--a person who lived his passion for the outdoors. Memories of knowing such a wonderful person are a great gift, but little consolation for having lost him. May your grief be eased by those memories, and your days lightened when you think of his smile.

The days have dragged by, and the week has come and gone. For someone who always has so much to say I just cant seem to find the right words to make the situation less painful. The profession that these men and women have chosen have always been dangerous but you never expect such danger to hit so close to ones heart. As loved ones to the firefighters, our job is to wait. So, waiting is what I do. I wait for an e-mail, a short visit home, a staticky broken up cell phone call, and if I am lucky, a surprise knock on my front door. Those are the moments that I long for, those are the moments that make up 6 months out of my year. It never once dawned on me that just as quickly as he comes, he can be gone just as fast. This experience was a definate eye opener. Life is short! Everything can be taken away in an instant. Appreciate what it is that you have, and who it is that you have. "Open the doors and cease the day"! To the family and friends of the well respected hero Dan, words couldnt even begin to describe the amount of love and sympathy many of us are sending. You all are both in my prayers and in my hearts. As for the Arrowhead family, remain active and strong. Always remember that obviously by the swarm of e-mails that have been sent, there are many people out here that love and care for you all very much. As the saying goes, "This too shall pass". Dan will FOREVER be in our hearts!

Reading all the entries of love and respect people have for Danny makes me fell very lucky to say I am his cousin. The outpouring of emotions at the services made me even more proud of Cousin Danny. When we were little kids we spent a lot of time together. Not only did his family live down the street, our mothers were very close friends. Danny and I were the same age so it was easy for us to get along. As a little kid Danny was very energetic with a huge imagination and always was fun-loving. i consider myself lucky to have grown into adulthood together. We may have taken different paths, but we always remained friends. I always talk about danny and his accomplishments , he will be missed and always in my thoughts. Thank you to the Arrowhead Crew for caring for my cousin with the utmost honor and dignity. Stay strong and stay safe.

The first thing I ever heard about the Arrowhead Hotshots is that you are "elite" and "the best of the best" and "Like the Yankees of the wildland fire fighting world." Having spent the last several days in your company, I know that those descriptions do not do you justice. You are the finest group of people I have ever met, and your bravery and strength and souls helped a lot of people in New Hampshire and around the country this week, even if this wasn't quite normal duty. I would love to keep in contact with you all individually, but I also want everyone who reads this book to know how amazing and special each of you are as individuals, and as a whole. You are and will always be Danny's people.

To our wonderful hotshot family: Into our darkest hours you entered our lives, and our lives will never be the same. Dan is no longer with us =, but all of you are. Ben, your strength and your gift of being with Dan on his final trip home will never be forgotten. Jake, for spending Friday with Dee and me- it was like having Dan with us. Brit and all the rest of you- the video you gave Dee and the rest of us Dan's voice and his walk and his laugh- you truly captured him. You are all so brave. We love you all. having you with us through our very hardest days was an incredible gift and we thank all who made it possible. Over the past week we have met and become friends with some very dedicated and wonderful people. Pat, Scot, Leslie, Barb, chief Dellner, Rochester FD, and so many more. We hold you all in our hearts and we will be constantly praying for your safety. There are no words to express my feelings and the feelings of the rest of our family. Love to you all!

I'm sorry. In my previous message, I neglected to mention how much the efforts of Chief Bill Kaage and Division Chief Dave Bartlett were in helping us to notify Dee and her family last week. They were there every step of the way in helping to ensure the best interests of Dan's family and the his crew. It was a pleasure having Bill, Dave and their staff at our station this week as well. Again, thanks.

Danny came back home this week, to Rochester, NH. Ahead of Danny came a small group of National Park Service personnel with their primary focus on his family and his crew. Pat Buccello from Maine and Scot Bowen from the Cape, led the plans in the initial first days for Danny's final farewell. As the week unfolded, so many more good folks arrived from the NPS to work with Pat & Scot, like Leslie and Barb. What great coordination and support from the National Park Service staff for Danny's family and his team. When Danny's crew, the Arrowhead Hotshots, came into our City, we knew their heart was heavy and their loss overbearing. This combined with the sorrow and grief of his wonderful family and friends from all over was heart-wrenching to witness at times. Our small City of 30,000 people, many that knew Dan and his family and went to high school here at Spaulding High with him, were sad and shocked as well. Our Firefighters, here in our City, had offered any of our assistance and our assets available to the family, the National Park Service and the Hotshot crews. Together, with our counterparts in our area Fire Departments and from all over the State of New Hampshire, we combined our efforts with the NPS, to honor Danny Holmes and his teams sacrifice. As we met the Arrowhead crew, our firefighters, especially here in Dan's home town, developed a great bond created by circumstances out of all of our control. It has been a very busy and hectic week here in Danny's hometown of Rochester. Its now Saturday night as I write this. Most of of you have now left here and gone back home and back to your lives. We miss all of you that visited us, NPS staff and Dan's crew, but as we told Dee, Matthew and Andy at the Fire Station today, we will not forget and we will continue to be there if you need us. On behalf of the members of the Rochester Fire Department, we are grateful for the honor, in being able to help with and being a part of, Danny's final services and tribute to his life. Very evident, in our conversations with his crew over the week, is the great respect they have for their boss, Brit Rosso, Arrowhead Hotshot Superintendent and Jim Cook, from Boise, both of who are a good part of the reasons for success of today's Arrowheads program. Thanks gang, for letting our crews hang with you for these past days and nights in your darkest moments. They appreciated your friendship and sharing those "adult beverages" over war stories about fires, life in general and things we all had in common. Hey Maura, it was fun for our crews working with you in cooking up a storm and making sure your crew got their waffles and breakfast on Friday morning ! Maura has it together, making sure they are taken care of.....that's for sure ! In closing, to the Arrowhead Hotshots who Danny loved so much, we hope your trip to Rochester, NH will leave you with an understanding of the type of place Danny Holmes came from, a better understanding of the great family and friends Danny had in his life and the importance of carrying on with the dignity, the honor and values that he represented. Take care, be safe and god bless all of you in your future endeavors in life. Chief Dellner.

Please accept our sincere condolences in your time of loss. As a member of a department who lost a brother ourselves (Kirk Schafer 7-27-01), we know only too well what you are going through. I can't offer anything that might help your recovery, other than letting you know that your suffering is shared by many more than your crew alone. Never forget, and honor Daniel by putting your own safety first and foremost from this point forward. Strength and honor, Bob, FCFF Local 1180

It's been one week since I received the tragic news about my little cousin, my brother.  When I received the news and the 48 hours following I never imagined that a week later I would would be happy. My little bro's passing is not what I'm happy about but being so closely related and so close to a young man who was and still is larger than life is what makes me happy.  I just want to extend my deepest and heart felt thanks to Brit and the whole arrowhead crew, the nps and every other firefighter and friend that made Thursday such an extraordinary way to say good-bye to a friend a brother.  I would also like to thank everyone who has posted such positive words about Danny, your kind words have brought a glimmer of light to me and Danny's whole family in our darkest hours. Thank you all again.

Holmes-slice, from that first fateful trip together to the geology expo. in ct. with lester, to our numerous assaults in the mtns. together and even sharing a room in flag for 3 months, you were a solid friend and always in good spirits. only you would go with me off trail in sedona for multiple days, not knowing where we may wind up or how we were getting home. only you would sleep on top of humphries peak in az, huddled together in 70+ mile hour winds, sheltered by the wind-block. these are only a few of the memories daniel my son, but i haven't forgotten the rest. i believe our last trip together was when i graduated from nau and we went up whitney in ca. and the marmots raged our food while we were climbing. oh well. i am grateful for all the time we were able to spend together and all that you have taught me about the mountains, myself and how to be a genuinely nice person. to everyone who knew dan i send the utmost love and respect. bruiser

Danny Boy was one of my best friends. I held him in a very special place in my heart. I first met Dan at JSC in 1997. We only went to school together for one semester. After he moved to Arcada, CA we began to write each other. And we kept in touch via pen pal for 7 years. We made it a point to see each other at least once a year, no matter where we were (VT, Flagstaff, AZ, NYC, Whistler, BC). Dan was the most inspirational person I have ever met. He was so peaceful, humble, and ready to help anyone. He had a pure and beautiful heart. He has truly enriched my life. In his last letter to me he wrote... "I just like the thought that we always be in touch and make an effort to stay that way... and know that a Mountain man is thinking of you." Well I'm thinking about that mountain man too, and I miss him. G-d Bless and keep you all my love Jaclyn Lesser

To Dan: The man who taught us all how to live, and how to enjoy living! Dan is our man. I went to school with Dan at Johnson State College. We became very close during our time. Dan was the most pumped kid I have ever met. His positive energy and drive to succeed is something that I will carry with me forever. There was never a day Dan was suck doing something he wasn't interested in doing....why?...He was always pumped doing it. No matter what it was. Together we shared many backcountry stories. Stories I will hold close to me forever. Dan and I took the ol' Bran Van across country together in Jan of 99'. He was on his way to Rainer for the summer and I was on my way to Humboldt State. An amazing trip. Dan's funeral was extremely respected. Folks from all over the country. Proud service men and woman giving thanks and support, made my heart swell with his energy. A commemorative website is being put together in his memory. Please take the time to visit: www.DANHOLMES.org in the next few weeks and feel free to post a picture or story. I love you dude. Your lingo, your spirit, your dedication to the environment, your positive affirmations...you will be with me forever. Love, Your bro, Brando www.DANHOLMES.org

Dan Holmes is one of my closest friends, I had a hard time even believing the news was true. Since '97 at JSC, when I met him and talked him into throwing away his old skiis and getting on a snowboard, we have had many good times; whether seeing music in the Northeast, visiting him in Flag at Cherry Hill, or breaking down on the side of the highway on the way to AND from the airport in Washington last winter. Danny taught me alot about myself, helped shape the direction of my life, introduced me to many wonderful people I wouldn't have met otherwise, and showed me that anyone can make their dreams happen. We all have lost an amazing person. Just wanted to let everyone know that we traveled to the funeral and it was one the most amazing and respectful events I have ever witnessed. I don't know if he ever thought that the celebration of his life would have caused a town to close their streets...but for some reason it doesn't surprise me, it's exactly the kind of respect he and his family deserved. Holmes-E your going to be missed dearly, but never forgotten, every powder turn and every step on the trail, I know that your with me. Much love to all, slop

I met Dan in 2001. While we were never close, I remember him well as a big part of the circle of friends I used to run around with here in Flagstaff. I remember his wonderful smile and his sincerity in all of his interactions with people. What I remember the most about Dan is that when my brother Andy was badly injured in a rock climbing accident, Dan was one of the people who consistently came to the hospital and spent time with Andy and our family. My mother remembers Dan, his smile, and the comfort of his company very well. Our hearts go out to the Holmes family. I was close with Jennifer Benton & I know they were great friends. She often talked about Dan to me. I just know now that the 2 of them are up/out there somewhere catching up & ragin' it. Though he and I were not close, he was close with so many people I love & I was deeply saddened to hear of this tragedy. I keep his family in my heart & in my prayers.

My condolences to his family and Jules, remember the great memories that Dan left us with. Dan was an incredibly bright flame in a windy world. His entrance into my life was in no way subtle. I had just escaped from drowning in a large university to the frightening intimacy of Johnson State College in VT. Before any anxiety set in from being lost and unsure of where I was, Dan jumped up from a bench in a busy entrance-way and walked me to my first class. He could read people before they had a chance to express themselves. His sincerity and vivaciousness impressed me and I never forgot that moment. From the time I met Dan, his presence was permanently branded into the framework of my life. Through his persistence, Dan introduced me to Les Kanat who became the most influential professor I have ever had the pleasure of becoming friends with. Through our mutual outdoor and academic enthusiasm, Dan, Les and I would find ourselves in Les’s office talking enthusiastically about everything; from the difficult assignment we had to hand in to Les the following morning to future backpacking/climbing/skiing plans. I was simultaneously inspired and saved by Dan’s energy and selflessness. After he graduated and continued his dizzying pace around the country I found myself once again blessed with his presence during my stay as a VIP Biotechnician at Mount Rainier National Park. He picked up where he left off, inspiring me as he did with so many others throughout his life, to not only live life to the fullest extent, but to push the line where that limit is drawn. We parted and then reunited again, this time in California, to shed his unique light yet again on a time in my life where I was lost. His generosity, kindness and overall personality carried me through some of the toughest times that I could ever have imaged. When the days were so dark that I thought the sky had fallen, a moment (and inevitably a few beers) with Dan would remind me of how beautiful life is and why it is important to continue to overcome all challenges and to march through each day of your life utilizing all that you have to offer. Dan had life “dialed” and he displayed this through the warmest smile, brightest eyes and a remarkable propensity for life. We regularly checked in with each other and shared the ups and downs that defined each passing year. Although there were pauses in our communication, most regrettably these last few months, Dan would always reach out to check in with me and remind me that I was still in his thoughts. These gifts that Dan gave me throughout the time that I have known him are obviously not exclusive to my experience knowing him. Everyone who’s life was graced by his presence, no matter how brief the encounter, received these gifts copiously. I know that I would not be where, or even who, I am without the strength and direction that I received from my friendship with “Holmey”. He was a genuine and passionate person. I recently embarked on the challenge graduate school in Durham, NH and, consequently, did not learn of his passing until late last night. Smothered in the grief associated with losing rare gem like Dan Holmes I am comforted by reading all the comments that his friends and family are sharing in this guestbook. He was loved by so many and his physical absence will remain a void while the gifts he gave us we will never forget. He always spoke of firefighting with passion and enthusiasm and I commend all the courageous men and women who painfully witnessed his passing and I appreciate all that you did for him. To the crew of the Arrowhead Hotshots, you regularly face the risks and danger associated with fighting forest fires and I deeply thank you for this. The duties you perform to save lives by diverting fires or prevent catastrophes by initiating biomass recycling are admirable and necessary. My thoughts are with you all during this difficult

For Dan's family and the Arrowhead Hotshots: I have never met any of you; but I wanted to extend my most heartfelt condolences to all of Dan's family and friends. This tragic accident is untimely and senseless and the more it is thought about, the less sense it makes. The only thought that comforts is that Dan is with our Lord in heaven and is watching over all of you brave souls for all of your days left to live. I don't understand why it is that those we love so so much are taken away too soon and the less important one's just never seem to go away. My best friend in the world was carried home a month ago. His tragic accident was also broadcast on National News. We had been friends for nearly 10 years and He always admired me for fighting wildfires..he always dreamed of following me on one of those crazy trips one day--So, for Frankie Brohm and Dan, lets continue to live on their wonderful legacy of bravery, love, laughter, and friendship. I keep you all in my daily prayers during this difficult time of grief and sadness---God Bless You All.

I’d like to dedicate a few words of my impressions and feelings regarding Dan, yet somehow I can’t help but to think that words alone cannot truly begin to do justice to Dan, or, rather, the aura that Dan exuded. I think, for many of us, the ineffable feelings and sensations that we received through Dan are far more indicative of how he moved us. However, I could not simply refrain from penning a few words about the Dan I knew and respected. This might seem a little long winded, but Dan might appreciate it as such. My first vivid memory of Dan is watching him descending a stairway from his apartment two doors down from mine. I had just parked my car and watched him as he casually and confidently strode down the stairs and onto the sidewalk leading away from the Park Employee Housing at Ohanapecosh. My first thought upon seeing him went something like, “Hmm, now there’s an interesting cat.” I stepped out of my car and greeted him. He immediately shot back with, “What’s up dude!!”…while kind of nodding, but rather, shaking forward and back from the shoulders up. And with such an honest smile and within it an aura, or energy that so subtly said, “I know something that you don’t, but I’ll help you figure it out.” I liked him immediately. Yet little did I know upon that first encounter that the Dan I would come to know and love would have such a profound affect on the summer days ahead. For most of the summer, of the year 2003, Monday thru Wednesday night, I had the pleasure of Dan Holmes’ presence. Whether on the job, or beside the community fire bullshitting and barbecuing, or jumping off cliffs into the Ohanapecosh River after work, or swilling beers while telling travel stories in his apartment, I was blessed enough to spend scores of hours getting to know Dan. Dan was the type of person that I crave to meet. He somehow possessed and maintained the impossible persona—one that was an amalgamation of paradox. I mean, how many people do you know that are Type A, balls-to-the-wall, high energy, ready to rage (as he would say), but somehow understood the fundamental tenets of the meaning of life….to live life perpetually, to seize EVERY day with genuine passion and to, literally, suck the marrow out of life.???? The sages tell us that one must achieve silence and quietness in order to begin to grasp enlightenment, or worldly understanding. But by some freak of nature Dan “got it” anyhow. He managed to muster enough positive and passionate energy to circumvent the laws of Being. His candid honesty and genuineness, his zest and exuberance for life, his sincere devotion to all that life has to offer is beyond reproach. It’s Oct. 6th today. I am still stunned and numb. I knew that he would soon be headed north. I knew that he would stop by James and Della’s in Buckley. I knew I’d receive a phone call with Dan on the other end, “Dude!! What’s up!! Here in the Bucktown ready to rage!! What’s up!!” he would say…..I can still hear his voice……….. I stated earlier that I crave to meet people like Dan. I say this because I sincerely respect his ability to (as I like to put it) journey down the rabbit hole. Dan was like an addiction for me, and I often found myself jonesing for a dose of Dan. Whether it was politics (I most note that we lost a dedicated lefty), economics, quantum theory, traveling or climbing, he always had an angle that was unique and always credible. I remember one evening, after several ponder laden beers, we struck a dialogue on climbing (imagine that). After listening to and discussing one another’s rhetoric, we hypothesized that there are many among the world’s populace that might, potentially, be the world’s greatest alpinists and/or rock climbers. There are tens of thousands that possess the physical capacity to be the world’s greatest climbers. But what separates those that are the greatest climbers (beyond socio-economics) from all other climbers--is passion. Passion for participating in and achieving one’s true love or dream in life…passion that so few among us take seriously, or steadfastly strive to fulfill…passion that so few among us are willing to take the necessary risks that might lead to its fulfillment. Dan was the poster child of passion fulfillment. He was sooo in to it!!....whatever his endeavor. I will miss him……and I’m not so sure I’ll ever get over the damned fact that I won’t be blessed again with his earthly presence…..in spirit someday my friend, I pray. I’ll look you up…..and we’ll rage!!!!! Mourning and Missing Dan, Ryan Cyphers, a friend….always Trail Crew-Mt. Rainier Nat’l Park

It's so very hard to write this. I can't imagine loosing one of the crew, and I consider myself so fortunate to never have had it happen. On the "Cave Fire" outside of Chiloquin, Oregon a couple of decades ago, we were cutting down a nasty snag, in the dark. Several of us were helping to 'push' the tree over. We looked up just in time to see the top 10' or so of the tree coming straight down at us. We were able to move back just a bit, and the top grazed us as it speared the ground at the base of the tree. So many of us have been there. Although I now work building airplanes, my thoughts every day are with all of you out there. I continue to develop ideas and machines that will help us in fire prevention and protection activities. Yes, I still think of being part of the group. If you've ever done it and got it under your skin, I don't think you are ever not thinking of it. I wish all of the Arrowhead Hotshots, his friends and of course Dan's family my deepest sympathy. Good luck in this difficult time. Take care of each other.

We met Dan Holmes while he and our son were attending Johnson State. Two years ago he and our son Jim showed up at our home for Thanksgiving Dinner...Dan brought his Tofu turkey and a six pack....we were happy by noon. We all tried some of his Tofu turkey & soy filling and laughed and enjoyed each others company. Although we spoke to Dan on occasion, most recently last winter while our son visited him in Bellingham, that Thanksgiving was the last time my wife & I saw him. Dan was a good young man. We will miss him.

Having known Dan since the day I arrived in Flagstaff, I feel blessed to have such wonderful memories of an incredibly free-spirited, adventurous soul. As I've told other friends here in Flag, I have learned some remarkable things through Dan. Not only his great sayings like "word life," which embodies Dan perfectly, but the love of being outdoors and cherishing every moment in whatever you do--be it rock climbing, snowboarding or even hiking. His laugh, his smile, his great hair, everything will be missed. I love you Dan! You will never cease to make me smile.

At a time like this I find it hard to find the right words to express what I'm feeling. I've shed tears of sadness for the loss of such an amazing and kind person, but also I've shed tears of joy for the privilege of being an acquaintance of Dan Holmes. Dan has made an impact on all of are lives, which will always be there. We are all blessed to have know such a positive soul as his and also we are blessed to now have him watching over us.

I have known Danny since he was 11 years old. I dated his older brother, Matt when we were in high school. I remember Danny as being a boy and young teenager. The first time I met him he was jumping on his couch wearing his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle pj's and yelling like only an 11 year old can do. Even then he had the biggest, brightest smile and sparkling eyes. He always had a quick word or catch phrase that would complete the moment and he always was laughing. At that time in my life (16) for me he was always Matt's pesky little brother, but as the years passed and I watched him grow into a young man, reading in the local paper about his sports accomplishments, and eventually an adult I knew that the world would be blessed by him in many ways.
